Every parent wants to keep his baby frozen in babyhood time. But capturing a cheetah in the wild may be easier. Baby photography is, at once, among the most charming and arduous of arts, especially when the baby is older than three months.
Capturing a newborn is simple enough. Capturing him up to three months is likewise. He is old enough just to lie in a crib or Moses basket, and little enough more, even if Mom or Dad has to hold him at that age. He may begin holding his head up or down in this age range, but he will not pose to your specifications. He barely knows you have the camera there.
When he ranges between three and six months, things become a little easier. He is beginning to sit up on his own. Your options increase. But that does not mean he will hold still long enough for you to squeeze a shot off. If your camera shutter is swift, you can catch him. But unless he is transfixed by something extremely pleasing to his eyes, he will not make it truly easy for you.
That is something to consider seriously when you choose a professional baby photographer for special baby events. Professional baby photography is fine and delicate. And the photographer who does not have the empathetic sensitivity needed to make a baby comfortable within his or her little self-involved world is the photographer you should avoid for these kinds of occasions.
Now, your baby is between nine and twelve months. He begins walking a little. At minimum, he pulls himself up now and then. At maximum, he takes several steps before collapsing again. Catch him between those maiden steps and he is a brilliant subject. Those steps may be fitful but the delays between them may be just enough to hit the shutter. Especially because he will not just stop, smile, point, or anything else you think you want him to do. In this as in enough other ways, the baby will, if you will pardon the expression, call the shots.
